School/University/Affiliation: Dukate Elementary School, Biloxi, MS Date: July 27, 1999
Grade Level(s): 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Subject(s):
- Language Arts/Whole Language
Duration: 45 minutes Description: This is a great way for students to get to know one another during the first few days of school. It also makes a great addition to any poetry unit. A two word biopoem could also be used to describe a character from a book or story.
Goals: Students communicate facts about themselves. Students appreciate poetry as a vehicle for communicating information.
Objectives: The learner introduces himself or herself by writing a poem about himself of herself with two words in each line of the poem.
Materials:
- paper
- pencil
- an example written by the teacher
Procedure: Describe yourself to the class. You may also tell about likes, dislikes, hobbies and needs. Show your two word autobiopoem to the class on the overhead. Read the poem to the students. Have students note that each line begins with a capital. And that there is no punctuation in a two word poem. After students read and discuss the model, students write their own poems. Example
