Duration: 45 minutes Description: This lesson provides a hands-on approach to sequencing and its importance.
Goals: This lesson will illustrate the importance of sequencing events.
Objectives: Students will use time-order words to sequence the steps it takes to make chocolate chip cookies.
Materials:
- 1 bag of cookie mix and necessary ingredients
- convection oven
- pans
- spatula
- oven mittens
- sentence strips
Procedure: 1. Gather the students in a large group. Discuss why it is important to put things in order. Review time-order words (first, next, then, after that, finally, etc.). Explain that the students will be making chocolate chip cookies paying special attention to the steps it takes to make them.
2. Gather the students around the table. The teacher will add the ingredients to the mixing bowl, verbally using time-order words. For example: First I put the flour in the bowl. Then I add the eggs…. Have each student take turns mixing the bowl. You can time the mixing, by using counting measures, or letters. For example each student gets to mix for 3 letters of the alphabet. Student 1 a-b-c, pass the bowl, student 2 d-e-f…and so on. As the students are mixing, review the steps used so far. Then have the students take turns putting the cookie dough on the pan. Place the cookies in the oven.
3. As the cookies are baking, gather the students in the back of the room. On sentence strips, record the sequence of events in making the cookies. Read them over with the class. Gather the students in small groups. Give each group a sentence strip. Have the group discuss where the step belongs in relation to the events. After a few minutes, begin asking the groups what step they have. Have one representative from each group come to the front of the room with their strip. Line the children and their step in order. Have the class read each step as the child holds up his/her sentence strip. Gather the class as a whole, and review the key words, as well as the importance of sequencing. Then enjoy the yummy snack.
Assessment: Students will:
1. verbally tell the steps it takes to make chocolate chip cookies, using time order words.
2. physically put the steps in order.
