- Story Book by Packard/Lucas (1997). It’s Halloween! Golden Books Publishing
- Crayons
- Markers
- Halloween worksheets (crossword, word search, coloring pages)
- Jokes
Procedure:
Introduction: Jokes -What do you get when you cross a black cat with a lemon?
* A sour-puss.
-What is a ghost’s favorite pie?
* Boo-berry pie.
Continue introduction with thoughts on Halloween.
-Which holiday is coming at the end of this month?
-What do you think of when you think of Halloween?
-What do you do on Halloween?
-What are you going dressed as?
-What is your favorite type of candy?
Introduce It’s Halloween!
Read through the book using active comprehension.
-What are the two kids doing in this picture?
-What different types of costumes do you see on this page?
-How do you think the kids feel in this picture?
-What did the two decide to dress as?
-What do you think the two heard outside as they walked from house to house?
-What do you think they see during their trick or treating?
-Do you think that all of the candy that they collected will last a year?
Ask the students if they enjoyed the book. What was their favorite part and why?
Students are able to choose one of the following:
-crossword puzzle
-word search
-coloring sheet and write a sentence or two about their picture.
Closure through summary of what was learned today.
What did they like the best, etc., and one last joke:
-What do ghosts drink on Halloween?
* Ghoul-Aid
Supplemental Activities:
Choose a different worksheet (crossword, word search, coloring page with sentences that follow). Student is able to write a short story (paragraph) reflecting on Halloween. Write some Halloween jokes of their own.
Assessment: Evaluation through participation while story was being read aloud. Evaluation of the worksheets.
