Duration: Three 90-minute sessions Description: A culminating poetry unit project.

Goals: Students will use poetry as a vehicle to express sentiment.

Objectives: The students will

1. read and interpret poems
2. create illustrations for poems
3. explain reasons for choosing each poem
4. create a poetry booklet
5. respond to project

Materials:

• computers
• magazines
• internet
• books of poetry
• anthologies
• folders
• paper
• art supplies

Procedure: 1. Decide to whom the booklet will be dedicated
2. Research a variety of sources and collect 20 poems (may include students’ own poems)
3. Type or print clearly in ink each poem on a sheet of paper
4. Draw images or cut out pictures to accompany each poem
5. Affix illustrations
6. Place an interpretation of each poem and an explanation for choosing the poem under each poem
7. After these pages have been completed, combine the following in a folder:

a. Dedication Page
b. Table of Contents (Include title and author of poems in alphabetical order according to author’s last name.
c. Collected Poems
d. Personal Response to Project

8. Peer Evaluation
9. Teacher evaluation
10. Present the booklet to the recipient and ask them to sign the verification document Assessment:
The project will be graded on content, creativity, grammar and usage, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Poetry Booklet-80% of Grade.
Returned Verification Form-20% of Grade.
