Description: In conjunction with a summer school program — Health Fair — day the following is a 1/2 to 45 minute lesson plan (that could be expanded and adjusted for an older age group
Goals: Children will be able to identify good snacks that are healthy and be able to sing rap which reinforces the 5 serving of fruits & vegetables a day
Objectives: Students will be able to sing rap and perform hand movements sung in rap. They will be able to answer the question:
How many servings of fruit & vegetables should we have every day?
Materials:
Leedy, Loreen (1994). The Edible Pyramid . Holiday House, NY
Procedure:
Begin Lesson in reading corner on rug.
Ask children what is a snack that they like to eat that is good for them. (most will respond with apple, orange, banana)
Ask a similar question about vegetables.
The above listed text has a simple story line that is suitable at the lower grade levels, but can be augmented to suit upper grade levels.
Then teach students that following rap, titled:
1. Apples, oranges, lettuce, cheese
all good snacks, if you please
REFRAIN:
Five a day are what you need
To grow up BIG and STRONG you see!
2. Apples, oranges, celery, cheese
All good snacks, if you please.

3. Apples, oranges, broccoli, cheese
all good snacks, if you please.

OPTIONS:
– can be done in round
– children jump up on BIG
– children flex muscles on STRONG
– for movement add: Come gather round, we will talk, about good nutrition as we walk. Assessment:
All children will be engaged during Rap and adding other good snacks to change words. They will also participate in movements.
Tested with Kindergarten students entering grade one. Done in a very hot during summer program. Students enjoyed tremendously and enjoyed to good snack samples brought in for their enjoyment.
