Description:

This lesson is about having your students write a poem using the fives senses. Divide the class into five groups.  Have each group take one sense, so the poem will involve the whole class.

Goal:

The students will understand the five senses.

Objectives:

1. Students will be able to list the five senses.
2. Students will produce a poem about the five senses.

Before you do this lesson discuss the season you will write the poem about. Ask students to think of ideas about the season ,such as, what they think it looks like, what it tastes like and so on.

Concepts: The groups need to make one descriptive that fits into their sentence.

Materials:

1. Note cards
2. One tag board

Procedure:

1. Before you divide the class into 5 groups write one sentence on the note card. There will be five note cards. Your note cards will say: Spring tastes like; Spring feels like; Spring sounds like; Spring looks like; and Spring smells like.

2. Divide the class into 5 groups. Assign one person to be the recorder in the group. Explain to the students that they will work together, so they need to agree on one answer.  Hand out one note card per group.

3. The students need to fill in the blank on the note card. They need to come up with one descriptive word that  reminds them of Spring, such as the word, green.

4. After the groups come up with their words, come together as a class. With the tag board write the sentences on the tag board.  Have the students give you the words that they wrote on the cards. The poem will be formed from their words.

5. Have students write the poem on another piece of paper so they have a copy.

Have students list the five senses.
